Adam B. Shapiro: Holding Out for a Hero
You may know Adam B. Shapiro as Der Rov from "Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish", as Gimpel from "Gimpel the Fool", as the cantor in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" on Amazon Prime, or even from his virtual series "(Still A) Live From Shapiro Hall". He is an actor, who has also appeared in HBO's "The Normal Heart" (2014), NBC's "30 Rock", NBC's "The Mysteries of Laura", and "Master of None" (2015). Shapiro has done theatre, film, and television — in both English and Yiddish. He is a lot of laughs, wrapped around a big cuddly heart.
In addition to acting, Shapiro is also an award-winning singer and cabaret performer. He won the 2013 MAC Award for Musical Comedy performer of the year for his show, "Guide to the Perfect Breakup". In 2020, Shapiro directed the star-studded "Folksbiene Chanukah Spectacular" at National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, a virtual benefit that enlisted more than 50 Yiddish performers from across the world.
On June 4, 2016, Broadway Sings for Pride held a Broadway-themed concert, as part of "Pride 2016", in White Plains, New York. "Pride 2016" was a multiple-attraction, family entertainment event, presented by The LOFT: LGBTQ+ Community Services Center. Musical performances by Broadway stars and the New York City Gay Men's Chorus were highlights of the program. Broadway Sings for Pride is a multiple award-winning, non-for-profit organization that brings together Broadway talent, activists, and celebrities, to educate the public, raise awareness of the needs of LGBTQ+ youth, and support these young people, so that they may reach their full potential.
Shapiro performed the song "Holding Out for a Hero" during the event, where Shefik served as Videographer. "Holding Out for a Hero" is a song recorded by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler for the soundtrack to the 1984 film "Footloose". The song was later featured on her sixth studio album, "Secret Dreams and Forbidden Fire" (1986). The track was produced by Jim Steinman, who co-wrote the song with Dean Pitchford.
"Holding Out for a Hero" was a Top 40 hit in several European countries, as well as Canada and the United States. Its 1985 re-release in the United Kingdom reached number two (remaining there for three weeks) and topped the singles chart in Ireland.
