When you or someone you love hears the words "you have cancer", it's one of the darkest moments of your life.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a global leader in the fight against blood cancer. The mission of Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world, provides free information and support services, and is the voice for all blood cancer patients seeking access to quality, affordable, coordinated care.

Be the voice that speaks up. Be the hand that reaches out. Be the light that cures cancer.

On October 21, 2023, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society held its annual, nationwide Light The Night event at Playland, for the Westchester and Lower Hudson Valley region. Playland, often called Rye Playland and also known as Playland Amusement Park, is an amusement park located in Rye, New York, along the Long Island Sound. Built in 1928, the 280-acre park is owned by the Westchester County government.

In support for Light The Night, Shefik organized a team of representatives from NBCUniversal and the employee resource group MyAbilities, as part of his role as Ambassador at NBCUniversal's corporate responsibility and social impact initiative, Comcast NBCUnites. Community activists and representatives from You're Our Unity and Ruff Ryders to the Rescue Foundation also accompanied the Comcast NBCUnites team, who walked together under the team name NBC Sports. Gold lanterns were lit in remembrance of those lost due to blood cancer, white lanterns for survivors and those currently fighting blood cancer, and red lanterns represented supporters of those fighting blood cancer.

For patients and their loved ones, Light The Night offers hope instead of helplessness, connection instead of loneliness, and life-saving research and support at every step. When we come together as a community, we bring more people out of the dark. Since 1993, Light The Night has raised $1 billon in funds.

Through Comcast NBCUnites, NBCUniversal is combining the talent and time of their employees, the power of their storytelling expertise and media platforms, and their philanthropic giving to deliver positive change in three areas: Building Stronger Communities, Empowering the Next Generation of Storytellers, and Promoting Media and Technology Skills.

NBCUniversal has a history of investing in communities through financial support, employee volunteerism, and raising awareness on important topics through their media platforms. The company's core objective is to maximize their impact, in both their local communities and across the world.
